Applicants for the PhD programme would be required to specialise in one of the following broad areas:
i. African Traditional Religion & Society
ii. Church & Society
iii. Ethics & Society
iv. Bible & Society (Students may opt for Old Testament or New Testament or Qur’an).
v. Islam & Society
Method of Assessment
The programme is an advance research degree requiring the presentation of a doctoral thesis after an extended period of research. Students will be required to present seminar papers. There shall be a maximum of two seminars per semester. At the end of the first year, the Department shall determine whether a student would progress to the next stage of the programme depending on the satisfactory performance in the seminar presentations. Students, who are allowed to continue the programme, must write a thesis of between sixty thousand (60,000) and a hundred thousand (100,000) words, on a topic approved by the Board of Graduate Studies. Students must also pass an oral defence (viva voce) of the thesis.
Duration
The duration of the programme shall be three (3) years for full-time students and five (5) years for part-time students. A maximum of one year extension is allowed.
